Write to your Politician

There are many issues in Calais which your representatives may not be aware of. If you are a citizen, you have the right to be listened to whilst refugees are being pushed to the margins of society. Use your power to speak up for those with no country, who seek nothing but refuge.

What to write?

Write what's in your heart. Be passionate. Your elected officials work for you. Let them know who you are and how you feel.  For more information on the situation in Calais, see our overview below.

LIVING CONDITIONS

  • 700 people sleeping rough in Calais

  • No permanent accommodation provided - people are at risk of hypothermia and death

  • Limited sanitation facilities

  • Only access to food and shelter (tents) is from associations

  • Emergency accommodation is opened sporadically on cold nights, but the French state has refused to honour its obligation to open emergency accomodation for the whole of winter - see our winter email campaign here.

  • Associations and volunteers continuously advocate for accommodation to be opened consistently, but we have been ignored.

Police violence and human rights abuses

  • Volunteers witness and take testimonies concerning police violence and human rights abuses on a daily basis

  • Reports of refugees being woken in the night by police spraying them with tear gas, beating them and/or destroying their tents and clearing their belongings

  • Food, water, phones and tents have been destroyed or sprayed with tear gas

  • People, including unaccompanied minors detained illegally in prison-like conditions

  • The UK government is complicit in these abuses - they have recently promised a further £44.5m to “border security”, including maintaining a heavy police presence

Dubs Amendment

  • Refugee Youth Service estimate that there are around 200 unaccompanied minors in Calais

  • The Dubs amendment is a provision within the 2016 Immigration Act that calls for vulnerable, unaccompanied minors in Europe to be transferred to the UK and offered state protection.

  • In 2017, not a single child was transferred to the UK under this provision. Ask your MP to push for transfers of children to the UK in 2018.

Family Reunification

  • A significant number of the displaced people in Calais have a legal right to be relocated to the UK under the Family Reunification provisions specified under the Dublin III agreement.

  • Transfers under this agreement are few and far between, and the vast majority of the work on these cases is carried out by volunteers and associations.

Stay informed!

We recommend these sources for extra information to cite when contacting your MP. They are also really great ways to gain background understanding of the situation in Calais, the wider refugee crisis, and to keep up with the latest updates from those on the ground.

  • Refugee Rights Data Project reports http://refugeerights.org.uk/reports/ - this group do fantastic reports in various locations on refugees, including several extensive reports in Calais, all available to download for free. Their last report in Calais was published in October, 12 months after the eviction of the Jungle camp.

  • Right to Remain www.righttoremain.org.uk - provides extensive information on applying for asylum in the UK, includes a free download of the Right to Remain toolkit, which explains the UK asylum process in detail

Thank you so much to our every person who has donated, volunteered or inspired us to continue our work on a daily basis.

We are so grateful for all of your support so far, we can't continue our work without it!
